Depression - A Community Resource
FROM: Stuart Mains
What NEED does this meet?
It seems that depression in general is on the increase; I for one have a dear friend who suffers from this affliction. I have tried my best at helping him, as it seems there really is no one else. A web based resource is needed to amalgamate the knowledge of depression as most of it is scattered over the web.
What is the APPROACH?
The approach is not a unusual one, a simple web based resource just a domain name, some web space and a database. The approach would be distinctive, as the resource would be targeted at depression and the forgotten element of people close to people with depression. It would be a amalgamation of all the current knowledge on depression and the resources the local area has available.
What are the BENEFITS to people?
The resource would have factions which range from current knowledge on depression, current treatments (advantages & disadvantages), books, relaxation techniques, resources in the local area, and so forth. It could also serve another purpose, as although people with depression are suffering it seems that the people close to them are ignored when they are suffering as well. Another purpose could be to educate the public on what is depression as again it seems that most people think depression is simply sadness and that is not accurate at all. The people close to people with depression could use the resouce so that strength could be drawn from the wealth of knowledge and that simple fact that other people are going through exactly the same thing.
What is the COMPETITION?
Most depression resources are freebased and nearly always focus on an actual persons depression and never mention the people close to people with depression. My idea must win out, as it is the only way that this affliction can be dealt with properly. The public must understand, the people who are close to people with depression must be helped in order to better help people with depression. Above all the people with depression must be helped.
What BUDGET & LOGISTICS are required?
Low cost but requires a lot of manpower in regards to compiling all knowledge on depression. Though once it is compiled it has to be updated. A simple website, domain & database are all that is needed. Tag on some web design and CGI scripts and it is ready to go.

Great idea. I often find myself trying to make seriously depressed (ie suicidal) people feel better but I have frankly no idea how to go about it. A forum to discuss ways to deal with the depression of others, both in terms of aiding them and coping yourself, would be a good addition.

I also think this is vital information to have accessible to the majority of people. However if you do a search on it there seems to be lots of the standard information available such as here http://www.psychologyinfo.com/depression/
I do not recommend that link however, I am just posting as an example of the type of information that is out there. And it seems lots like that is online already. However, I think the real problem is that it does not hit home to a depressed person that they can relate to such cliniclly expressed information. For those that are attempting to assist depressed associates this information as well may seem impersonal and not very rewarding. But I would in the meantime try to use as much of it to create your own picture of depression from.
I think the most rewarding would be something such as I have suggested in my post http://mysociety.blogs.com/mysociety/2003/11/human_conscious.html
Depression is another topic that is enhanced through my idea (as most information type subjects would be). But being quite exposed to concepts and experience in depression I know that there is lots of information out there clinicly that is misleading and that there are lots of ideas and concepts that are out there that do not get much publicity and most likely won't unless a solution similar to what I am referring to is done.

i think it would certainly help to bring everyone in on this most difficult of subjects. I have suffered from depression and also see the disease in the UK especially( i live in Amsterdam) as a major problem that get brushed under the carpet.
A local support network would certainly make treatment or at least finding support so much easier.
I also am working on an advanced web based diary application that helps you track your emotions and belief structure to give people suffering from depression or just living this life which itself is full of conflict a tool to map themselves out and hopefully be able to use this to transform themselves.
So yes let's develop community support tools: where people can discuss with and support each other in regards mental problems such as depression, and, also develop individual tools that can give people a means to discover themselves over time to show them the way their beliefs, attitudes and feelings relate to each other over time.

I think your idea is brilliant and that this sort of a web site is essential. I'm sure most people know of others who have been depressed but have never known how to help them, and may even not recognise the symptoms of depression, so a site like this is imperative so that people know the right actions to take if someone is depressed, or they suspect someone is depressed. Not everyone trusts doctors etctera, nor do they have the resources to go to get proffessional help, so if they have friends who can consult this resource then a lot of people could be saved from the brink.

I support this suggestion. Might also be of interest to Depression Alliance. www.depressionalliance.org
